Vietnam starts work on Cho Moi-Bac Kan expy
HCMC – Work has begun on the Cho Moi-Bac Kan expressway as Vietnam is racing to develop transport infrastructure and fuel economic expansion in northern provinces.
The Ministry of Construction, in coordination with the People’s Committee of Bac Kan Province, held a groundbreaking ceremony today, March 15.
The publicly funded expressway will enhance transport efficiency and safety, facilitating economic growth along the Hanoi-Thai Nguyen-Bac Kan-Cao Bang corridor.
Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh emphasized the project’s strategic role in Vietnam’s expressway network, noting that the country currently has 2,021 kilometers of expressway in operation. He stated that by the end of 2025, this figure is expected to increase to approximately 3,000 kilometers, with a long-term goal of reaching 5,000 kilometers by 2050.
Minh highlighted its broader impact, stating the road will link Bac Kan with Hanoi and Hai Phong’s international port, strengthening regional integration and boosting trade.
The minister called on local authorities to accelerate land clearance and resettlement while facilitating access to construction materials. He also urged contractors to ensure scientific planning, maintain technical standards, and uphold environmental protection measures throughout the construction process.
The 28.8-kilometer expressway will include a 28.4-kilometer main route and a 0.4-kilometer connection to National Highway 3B and the Bac Kan-Ba Be road. Designed for a speed of 80 km/h, it will feature four lanes and a 22-meter-wide roadbed. The project, which includes 18 bridges totaling 4.66 kilometers in length, is set for completion by 2026.
