Private sector involvement in Vietnam's waste treatment sector, particularly with industrial and household solid waste, is significant. However, Vietnam has yet to fully utilize its resources, with around 17 million tons of solid waste remaining untapped for composting, recycling, and waste-to-energy.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) dominates the waste generation in Vietnam with a contribution of 49.5% of total solid waste generation in the country in 2022. MSW is forecasted to continue its solid growth of 13% until 2025, driving by rapid urbanization in Vietnam.

In 2022, Vietnam generated 26.1 mn tons of MSW, ranked 3rd place among other countries in the SEA region. However, only 15% of solid waste is recycled and reused, indicating huge potential for new investors to tap into the market.

With solid waste generation on the rise, WtE emerges as a potential waste management solution in the coming period drawing private and foreign investment for sustainable MSW management.
